I’ve already made the case that G major and A Dorian aren’t interchangeable just because they share the same notes — the tonal center changes everything. But that leaves a practical question unanswered: once two scales are organized around different centers, what actually produces the difference in sound?

It comes down to a single note.

One note does the work

Each mode has exactly one note that separates it from its natural reference scale. I’ll call that reference the parent scale: Ionian for the major-flavored modes (the root, 3, and 5 make a major triad), Aeolian for the minor-flavored ones (root, 3, and 5 are a minor triad). The note that sets a mode apart from its parent is the modal note. It’s the whole identity of the mode, compressed into one degree.

  • Lydian’s modal note is the raised fourth.
  • Mixolydian’s is the flat seventh.
  • Dorian’s is the raised sixth.
  • Phrygian’s is the flat second.

Locrian is an exception. It is based on a diminished triad (root, b3, b5), so it is neither major nor minor.

And Ionian and Aeolian have no modal note at all, because they’re the references everything else is measured against. There’s nothing to distinguish them from themselves.

This isn’t my framework. I learned this approach to modal theory from Enrique Vargas, built on the system Vincent Persichetti laid out in 20th century harmony.

Why the one note matters

The modal note is what gives a mode its flavor. Everything else in the scale is shared with the parent. That one degree is the entire difference between sounding like the mode and sounding like its plainer cousin.

Take D Dorian. It’s D Aeolian with one change: a B natural instead of a B flat, the raised sixth. If you play in D Dorian but never lean on that B natural, never put it on a strong beat, never let it show, you aren’t really playing Dorian. You’re playing minor with a Dorian label. The note is right there in the scale, but the mode only shows up when you use it.

Same logic with the other modes. E Phrygian is E Aeolian with a flat second, an F natural sitting a half step above the root. Hit that F early and often, and the Phrygian color arrives immediately. Avoid it, and you’re back to plain minor.

Major and minor pentatonic scales show this from the other direction. Each one keeps the shared notes and drops exactly the degrees that would identify a mode. Major pentatonic is 1 2 3 5 6, so the 4 (raise it and you’re in Lydian) and the 7 (flatten it and you’re in Mixolydian) are both gone. Minor pentatonic is 1 b3 4 5 b7, dropping the 6 (raise it for Dorian) and the 2 (flatten it for Phrygian). That’s why a pentatonic sits comfortably over several modes at once: it carries no modal note to give any of them away.

What to do with it

When you want a passage to sound modal, the move is simple to say and worth a lot in practice: find the modal note and use it.

Put it on strong beats. Start and end phrases on it, or near it. Let the chords that contain it carry the harmony. The mode lives in that one degree, so give that degree the spotlight and the sound takes care of itself.

That last point opens the next door. The modal note doesn’t just color your melodies; it’s also what sorts your chords into the ones that project the mode and the ones that stay neutral. That’s the primary-and-secondary-chord idea, and it’s where this gets genuinely practical for writing progressions. That’s the next post.

For now, the takeaway fits on a sticky note. A mode isn’t a shape you start in a different place. It’s a scale with one note that does all the talking. Learn where the modal note is, play it, and really get it into your ear.
